Benefit Reductions For Spare Rooms (Under Occupancy)

From April 2013, the Government is proposing to reduce the amount of Housing Benefit paid to working age tenants who have spare bedrooms in their homes. This will apply to all council and housing association tenants.

If you already live in a council or housing association home or are thinking of moving into one and have a spare bedroom(s), your housing benefit could be cut.

For the first spare bedroom, your housing benefit will be cut by 14% and 25% for two or more spare bedrooms.

Examples

Under occupying by 1 bedroom

If you under occupy your home by 1 bedroom and the rent is £120.00, you will have your benefit reduced by 14%.

14% of £120.00 is £16.80 – This is the amount that you would have to pay.

Under occupying by 2 bedrooms

If you under occupy your home by 2 bedrooms and the rent is £120, you will have your benefit reduced by 25%

25% of £120 is £30.00 – This is the amount that you would have to pay.

Of course, you’ve very little chance of finding somewhere to rent at these amounts!

A truly nasty leader of a truly Nasty Party.
