For the vast majority of us it hardly matters. As long as we have the song is all we are really interested in. It’s a tad different if you are part of Led Zeppelin or Spirit.
In the blue corner we have Robert Plant and Jimmy Page with “Stairway To Heaven” and in the red corner we have Spirit and ‘Taurus’ written by the late Randy California.
US District Judge Gary Klausner ruled earlier this month that “Stairway to Heaven” bore “substantial” similarities with “Taurus” after Michael Skidmore, a trustee for California, filed a lawsuit alleging that Page had been inspired to write his hit after touring with Spirit in the late Sixties.
Lawyers for Randy California are seeking a mere $1 settlement along with a writing credit for composer and guitarist. California’s trustees would then receive future profits from “Stairway to Heaven”. It could then all be settled for just a $1 and, worth so much more, a simple writing credit.
