Top marks to the Australians who have not messed about. None of the ‘take 6 months inquiry’ the English panel seem to take. Captain Smith and Vice-Captain Warner have both been banned for a year. Have some of that cheaters!
The fall-guy, Cameron Bancroft, who they got to ‘do the deed’ gets a nine month ban. All three have been sent home early before the fourth Test against South Africa.
Smith and Bancroft have also been banned from captaining Australia for the next two years while Warner will never again be considered for “any team leadership positions in the future”.
They also debunked all that ‘it was yellow tape’ tosh and revealed Bancroft had lied to the umpires as it was sandpaper that he had used to rough-up the ball.
The cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland said, “This has caused damage to the game as a whole and certainly to Cricket Australia. It has compromised the fans’ faith in cricket and it’s our responsibility to reinstate that confidence.
“It appears to be an isolated incident but if there are other allegations we will take them further. There was some courage in owning up but there was an element of untruth and that’s something we took into consideration.”
The ban has extended beyond Australia. Smith and Warner both had highly lucrative Twenty20 contracts with the IPL worth over £1m each! The IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla has said, “We are also barring those two players from this season. The franchises will get replacements for the players.”
Bancroft was due to join Somerset and at the moment his fate lies in the balance.
